The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most important traditional celebrations in East Asia. Falling on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, it usually takes place in September or October. In 2026, the festival falls on September 25.
Traditionally, the festival is a time for family reunions, giving thanks for the autumn harvest and celebrating together under the full moon. One of its best-known traditions is eating mooncakes—round pastries whose shape represents the full moon and symbolises family unity and togetherness.
Families gather for festive meals, children carry colourful paper lanterns, and people take time to admire the full moon. At its heart, the Mid-Autumn Festival is about being together, appreciating family and celebrating abundance.
